Our Model

Built On Dignity, Sustained By Community

Cambiando Vidas is a partnership — partner families as stakeholders from day one, volunteers as builders alongside the community, an exchange of experience that runs both ways, and every home funding the next home or community project."

This video captures the essence of our mission—to create sustainable change through hands-on collaboration and shared humanity. Whether you're considering joining a build or supporting our cause, this glimpse into our work showcases the transformative power of community-driven action. Discover how Cambiando Vidas is not just building houses, but also fostering hope and opportunity for deserving families.

IMMERSION

Side by side with the local community

Volunteers experience a local community, a way of life, and landscape very different from what they are used to by:

  • Working full days side by side with local community members to complete the house build, sharing in the effort, laughter, and accomplishment
  • Supporting other community services based on expertise and need
  • Sharing local food prepared by the community for all the workers on site
  • Staying at a local hospitality facility
  • Visiting local sites and learning their history

Our Immersion Model

Built On 5 Pillars

Every experience is intentionally designed around five pillars — because how you build matters as much as what you build.

DignityFirst

We build with people, not for them.

SharedWork

Transformation happens through doing.

CulturalImmersion

Immersion creates understanding.

GuidedReflection

Experience becomes transformation.

LastingConnection

Relationships continue beyond the build.

A Week in the Field

What a Trip Looks Like

Eight days on the ground — here is what each one holds.

  1. Day1
    Arrival and Orientation

Meet the team, the community, and the partner family you’ll be building with.

  2. Days2–5
    Building Together

Full work days alongside local community members — laying blocks, mixing cement, preparing rebar, painting. Afternoons and evenings include local meals prepared on-site, community conversations, cultural activities and curriculum related workshops if applicable.

  3. Day6
    Celebration Ceremony

The home gets its finishing touches. The partner family takes ownership. The whole community marks the moment together.

  4. Day7
Explore the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo

History, architecture, and time to reflect on the week.

  5. Day8
    Departure

Farewells, transfer to the airport, and the journey home.

Testimonials

What Volunteers Are Saying

Open minded resilience, empathy, admiration, and discomfort. If you are prepared for these things… you will have a great experience in the Dominican Republic.

Jane

Embrace frustrations and persevere through them… You need to really embrace this experience because what you put into this trip is what you get out of it… So come with curiosity and be comfortable being uncomfortable.

Keria

My experience with Cambiando Vidas gave me a new definition of home that was incomparable to any other. This organization helps blend cultures, create family and promote a common goal where differences disappear as volunteers work alongside each other… Not only does Cambiando Vidas mix concrete and dirt but it also mixes cultures to create friendships and smiles.
