When we arrived at the build site each day, we weren’t exactly sure what we would be working on. Building the walls, laying the floor, painting – each day was something different. One thing remained constant though, and that was the wonderful lunch made by the women of Lavapie.
Every day around noon the volunteers, community members, and builders gathered outside in the shade and eat a delicious meal together. The cuisine was authentic Dominican Republic food, usually consisting of chicken, rice, and beans. Each day there included a special treat like avocado, eggplant, or tayota – a fruit found in the DR.
The women of the community started chopping vegetables and preparing the meat around 10:00am. For hours they worked together to create a tasty, satisfying meal for all of us. The time and care they took to prepare the meals each day was another reminder of Lavapie’s friendly and welcoming nature.
