House #51

20 Jan

The iMedia class of 2014 at Elon University was part of an extremely special project with Cambiando Vidas this year. Not only did we get to be part of the build for the 51st house, we were on this trip to gather content for the redesign of the Cambiando Vidas website.

Along with a Rutgers group of volunteers, the Elon iMedia group was immersed into a week long life-changing experience of documenting the development of another house to add to the wonderful community of Lavapie.

The recipients of the 51st house were Joel Filimon Alcantara, Anny Ramirez, and their one-year son Joel Emil. After they had helped build other houses within the community, Joel & Anny applied to the program hoping to be the next beneficiaries of Cambiando Vidas.

Each day we got to contribute, document and witness a new home being built from scratch for a well deserving family, starting with the first line of bricks. Members of the community,  children, previous beneficiaries of Cambiando Vidas, and volunteers all came together to lend a hand wherever they could.

The house was finished in five short days. This not only demonstrated an amazing work ethic amongst the community members, but a perfect example of what can be achieved when individuals come together to help others.

Congratulations Joel and Anny!
